Dr Andrew Johnson

Andrew is the Chief Learning Officer of Eskom. A seasoned HR executive Andrew has special interests in HR strategy consulting, leadership development, talent & succession management, organisational transformation, & change management.
Andrew was born in Cradock and matriculated first class from Holy Rosary Senior Secondary in 1979.
He has followed a career primarily in Organisational Effectiveness in the private sector (incl. Edcon, MTN, Avmin, JSE, Liberty) where he held senior positions. Andrew’s influence stretches beyond his organisation having consulted on leadership best practices to other state-owned entities, private companies, and African & BRICS utilities.
He has occupied many non-executive roles in FASSET, the NEF, the COJ Property Company, Transparency SA, NSFAS, & King II; currently he serves on the Advisory Committee of the industrial psychology department of UJ (where he is also an occasional lecturer), & the HR (Staffing) Committee of UKZN.
Andrew is passionate about giving back to the world of human sciences & is involved in a number of professional associations, including the Society for Industrial & Organisational Psychology of South Africa (president in 2011/12), & the Global Forum on Executive Development & Business Driven Action Learning.
Andrew has been highly recognized both inside his organisation amongst others being awarded Eskom Executive of the Year 2012 (runner-up) & awards in the office of the chief executive for innovation & excellence for experiential leadership architectures, & leadership effectiveness measurement.
Externally he has been awarded as the winner of the prestigious IPM HR Director of the Year 2014, SABPP Lifetime Achievement Award 2014, & SIOPSA Honorary Life Membership 2012.
He is in high demand as a speaker at many professional conferences, & equally in demand as a coach & mentor to many executives and young professionals. At his core Andrew is a deeply passionate student of human behaviour in the context of work & how this can create a better self, team, organisation & society in general.
With a natural bias towards the strategic aspects of organisations he has proven his capability to lead high performing teams in deep conceptual & critical inquiry for practical delivery to bring about significant change for organisations.
An Industrial Psychologist by profession, he holds an MSc Occupational Psychology (Nottingham) & a PhD Industrial Psychology (UJ). He has also completed formal philosophical, theological & exegetical studies at St. Peter & John Vianney Seminaries & St Joseph’s Scholasticate. He is the co-editor (and contributor) to a book commissioned by KR Publishing, entitled Leadership: Perspectives from the Frontline.
